QR Types: FAQs

There are five/six common QR Code formats, with each of them having its own unique use case.

Model 1 and Model 2 QR codes

Models 1 and 2 are the standard QR Code prototype. These are used on a day-to-day basis on all kinds of marketing materials like posters, flyers, websites, product packaging and billboards.

At first glance, both QR Code models look almost exactly the same, but there are subtle differences that give Model 2 the edge. Let’s explore the key characteristics of both QR Code models.

Model 1

Model 1 was the original QR Code and it’s the design that all future iterations have been based on. The largest version of Model 1 is 14 (73 x 73 modules) and the most it can store is 1,167 numerals.

Model 2

Model 2 is an improved and optimized version of Model 1, and the largest version of Model 2 is 40 (177 x 177 modules) which is capable of storing 7089 numerals. As well as having a higher storage capacity, Model 2’s alignment pattern means the QR Code is easier to detect and read than its Model 1 predecessor.

Micro QR Code

As the name suggests, a Micro QR Code is smaller than other versions. Storing fewer characters or data (maximum 35 numerals) compared to standard QR codes, the largest version of this QR Code is M4 (17x17 modules) and it only has one orientation. As well as being easier to print on smaller surfaces, this means it only needs one finder pattern.

Micro QR Codes are designed for situations where a small amount of data needs to be encoded and where the space to display a QR Code is limited. For this reason, they’re usually found on products such as circuit boards, machine hardware, or other electrical components.

Generally speaking, Micro QR Codes are used to manage inventories or to optimize stock management.

Rectangular Micro QR Code

rMQR (Rectangular Micro QR) Codes fill the middle ground between standard Model 1/2 QR Codes and smaller Micro QR Codes.

Like Micro QR Codes, rMQR Codes are space-saving QR codes. However, unlike Micro QR Codes, they’re capable of storing larger amounts of data and are easy to read.

As the name suggests, these are rectangular in shape and are therefore used for narrow or thin spaces.

The maximum version of a Rectangular QR Code is 61 (422 x 422 modules) and they can store about 40,000 numerals.

Security QR Code

The Security QR Code (SQRC) looks like a regular QR Code, but acts differently and has limited capabilities compared to other QR codes. With data reading restrictions in place, a Security QR Code is most commonly used for managing private data or a company’s internal information.

FrameQR Code

This QR Code type looks like a standard Model 1 or 2 QR Code, but the difference is that it incorporates a canvas area that can be used for promotional activities.

In the center of the code is a space where graphics, letters, photos and illustrations can be displayed. Without impacting the code in any way, by using a FrameQR Code, you can include a logo or call to action (CTA) within the QR Code design.

High Capacity Colored 2-dimensional QR Code

With an additional Color Palette Pattern field, a High Capacity Colored 2-dimensional (HCC2D) QR Code uses color to increase the density of data. This helps to minimize the effect of potential chromatic distortions that can occur when the code is scanned or printed.

As a rule, there’s no single QR Code that works for everything. The best approach to creating QR codes is to first decide what you want to use them for, what you intend to print or place them on, and who your target audience is.

With these things worked out, you can establish what type of QR Code best fits your requirements.

No, you don't need a dedicated QR Code scanner or QR Code reader to unlock the power of QR codes. Instead, most people scan them using the camera on their smartphone.

However, if you have an older mobile device your camera might not be able to read the code. In this rare instance, you should download a QR Code reader app and use that.

QR Code Generators are online platforms that have software you can use to create QR codes. To use QR Code Fusion's QR Code Generator and create free QR codes, sign up for a free account.

The easiest way to scan QR codes is to point your smartphone camera at the QR code.

When it comes to QR codes, Model 1 was the prototype, and Model 2 was designed as an improved and more powerful version of the original.

The good news is that a QR Code can't be hacked. As long as you use a reputable site like QR Code Fusion to generate QR codes , you're in safe hands.

However, a hacker can generate a QR Code that sends end users to a fake website where they'll steal your personal data and track your location. To avoid encountering malicious QR codes from a user perspective, always try to verify where your QR Code originated from or use them from trusted sources and brands.

QR codes took their inspiration from barcodes. However, instead of using the simple, rectangular shape that can hold limited amounts of information, QR codes were built using a square design. This helps them hold a lot more data and even multiple URLS, making them a lot more versatile than standard UPC barcodes.

The aim of most QR codes is to share information and gather as much traction as possible. That said, some QR codes have data reading restrictions in place. These are known as Security QR Codes, and can be used to manage private data or internal information.
